What can the youth do?
Sunday, December 30th, 2007Assalamualiakum. Alright, now for a proper post.
While I have the slight impatience that we need to start reviving and implementing the Islamic Sciences now, the movement of such has been started since the 70’s . Alhamdulillah; initiatives by Syed Hossein Nasr, Munawar A. Anees, Abdus Salam and Muzaffar Iqbal amongst many others have instilled the importance of Islamic Science with their amazing insights and contributions. Institutions such as Muslim Heritage, Center for Islamic & Science, COMSTECH (under OIC) play a key role in educating the contemporary world about science in Islam as well as propogating S&T initiatives in Muslim countries around the world.
Unfortunately, three decades on, the influence of the Western secular sciences still remains in most of the Muslim countries. Some problems include political obstacles (might be cliche to mention that, but nonetheless its a real and substaintial problem), uninformed or even ignorant Muslim scientific intellects, as well as the opposition from Western scientists who remain stubborn to accept the unity of “science” and “faith”. It is clear that this is a herculean task. Despite that, the foundations are already laid out. Substantial research has been done about the past contributions of the Muslim scientists. The information is there in books and countless internet resources.
The internet is not to be underestimated, by the way. It is the tool of this century that can unite the whole of the Ummah. Sites like Hadithuna are just some of the places where Muslims can propogate ideas and share ilm across cyberspace. Another reason of the importance of Internet? This is where the youths (children, teenagers and young adults) reach out and learn. One can easily point out that if portals like social networking sites and video sharing sites can easily attract them, so can Islamic websites that help with the revivial of the Muslim Ummah.
What’s next is for the youth today to appreciate the efforts done by Muslim scientists; from the past as well as the present. Next, we must utilize all the knowledge. Finally, we must embed the Islamic scientific methodology, in which reason is under the subservient of the Quran.
We are the future of Islam, so we must acknowledge and accept the responsibilities of what me must do, Inshallah :)
